Banner's experiments with his Gamma-ray machine are starting to affect his alter-ego in adverse ways. The machine helps him transform to the Hulk and retain some of Banner's intellect although the Hulk's rage is starting to null the effects somewhat. Banner is still trying to control the Hulk, but his efforts are in vain. The Hulk's rage is starting to dominate his personality and Banner's machine is starting to lose it's effectiveness.

Why were two stories shown on this cover? Was THE HULK in circulation trouble? Were they experimenting to see what could raise sales?

I bought this comic book when I was a kid, as I wanted to read the story about the gladiator from space. Boy, I was sure disappointed when I read it as a kid, but now, I really like it. Those cold war super-hero vs. commie bad guys stories are really cool. Back in the old days when this comic book was new, my mom was a big fan of the Hulk, too. It's a shame that the Hulk series only ran for six issues in the early days. I really enjoyed those books, and I owned every issue except #1.
