This story is basically a modern-day version of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” about a twisted scientist, Victor Avery, who creates a chemical formula that transforms him into “The Midnight Monster” (who looks very similar to the Incredible Hulk in the early issues of his series ). This story came out a couple months before the Hulk did, so the Midnight Monster is sort of an intro character. I wish Vic would climb out of that bottomless pit he fell into for a match with ol' Greenskin himself (or maybe at least take on the Monster Hunters (Bloodstone, Dr. Druid, etc.) in a story set in the pre-hero Marvel Universe)

one of my favorite reprints…..even if its just a retelling of ''THE BRUTE THAT WALKS'' with a less likeable (make that,EVIL)lead.there are two similar atlas stories about immortal criminals who get their comeuppance in MENACE and MARVEL TALES,so that must have been the endings inspiration……..for the record,i think this hit the stands a month before HULK#1. PS:how about a brute that walks vs. midnight monster story?it could be a sibling rivalry thing since i think, both were named ''avery''….or was that bruttu?let me check….
