Dear Editor,
I loved the re-printed version of this story. I do not know if there was a refrence to HYDRA in the first version or not, but I thought there presence was good.

This reminds me of the movie, “Colossus, The Forbin Project”.

Great story. What do you think about the similarity to the movie? Was HYDRA mentioned in the first version?

Take care,
Bob T.

To Bob T:
Actually, this story was first done a few years before HYDRA (or even SHIELD, for that matter) was even introduced.

Many of Marvels stories of the early 1960's utilized the Russians as the bad guys (Lousy Commies!) complete with hammer-and-sickel insignias.
When this story was reprinted in the mid 1970's, there was a warming of relations between the US and the USSR in a period of detente to promote international peace, so Marvel followed suit by re-lettering with the “HYDRA” references and the hammer-and-sickel was redrawn as an “H” (I remember Marvel doing the same thing in a Ditko story reprint as well)

And check out Strange Tales #72 “Colossus” because this story , “Ruler of the Earth”, is just a redoing of that story with the exact same plot and ending (“I AM A MERE MACHINE…”)

These unreprinted tales are a godsend! The only way to see them without shelling out big bucks that my wife insists the kids will need for college. The dragon story had a few suprises. Funny out these mysterious fogs pop up in Stan's stories over and over again. Or did Stan leave it up to Jack and the King mutter to himself, “I'll just use the old mysterious fog gag again.”
Very cool that Kirby's dragon is so closely based on Tenniel's Jabberwocky. Fun, fun stuff!

What's with that “What is the Hulk?” scribble at the bottom of pg 4?

............. Haverholm :: 04 October 2004

It's an in-house ad for some new book called “The Incredible Hulk”; probably won't last long, though, people will just confuse him with Xemnu, the REAL Hulk.
