A Martian

History: A Martian spy landed his flying saucer on Earth. A man saw him land, but the man was struck by the Martian. The Martian then assumed the man's form. The man overheard the Martian say that nothing less then infra-red rays could pentrate his disguise. The man went to warn others of the Martian, but no one believed him. The man created an infra-red machine to detect the Martian as the Martian took on other human forms. During their final confrontation, the man tricked the Martian by ducking as the Martian jumped at him. The Martian smashed through elevator doors and plunged to his death down the elevator shaft. The “man” took off his face mask, revealling himself to be a friendly Venusian.

Height: 9 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Martian's strength was great enough to easily overpower a human. The Martian was also a shape-shifter and could take on a variety of human forms.

Hmmm … . A shape-changing “Martian” totally unlike any other inhabitant of Mars seen in a Marvel comic? Surely he's a Skrull!

Two ideas; one is that these martians are different since they are in alternate universes anyway, or….the twilight world effect; somehow that misty doorway has appeared round the earth, and earth has contact with a variety of alternate solar systems in alternate universes. One other is, that in this world, Mars is the site for tests in the creation of 'fake' societies populated by creations of someone or other, perhaps an elder, or perhaps a sort of rouge celestial. So there would be a variety of 'races' on mars, each one thinking THEY were the one true martian race. Possibly also that they were the ONLY martian race.

HOT-DAMN!!! thats awesome,butcha missed one!!!in fact THE very first super-powered foes a marvel hero(chronologically-speaking)faced!!!! in MARVEL MYSTERY#3 the human torch battles martians who well,okay,i lied they arent super powered,theyre super stupid is what they are…..in the story,martians who can apparently breathe oxygen,assault a train carrying torchie(not yet using his jim hammond alias,though fans would not have long to wait)and a profeessor carson,owner of the 'carson explosive company',who are watching a train broadcasting “lawson bells”(ha ha ha.VERY FUNNY)broacast about martians,TELEVISED!!!,IN 1939!!!,the aliens then ,rather stupidly kill carson by causing the train 'the comet' to wreck by firing atomic death rays that come out of their spaceship,that looks JUST like the ones on the moviescreen(in a train car,where a wanted criminal,the torch is traveling,that is cheap cost,and has a tv. screen,in 1939)!!! despite this VERY public appearence the aliens use a (one eyed)human flunkie named ritton,apparently as a cover,so they can…STEAL SOME SOLARBENITE??NO……MAKE THE SON OF JOR-EL KNEEL BEFORE THEM??NO…….STOP US STUPI HUMANS FROM NUKING OURSELVES IN A COLD WAR?NEIN.THEYRE HERE TO STEAL MINE EXPLOSIVES YOU CAN BLOW UP IN A 3-ROOM BUILDING EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE ATOMIC POWER!!! YEA!!,unfortunately for them,theyve,just killed the explosives maker so,you can kinda,see the ramifications….HOWEVER!!…our hero is able to get a few words out of carson as hes crushed by a window pane-thingy………………CARSON:YOU HEARD THESE MEN MENTION MY NEWEST FORMULA FOR A SAFER TNT,WELL SIR,ITS IN MY POCKET!,IF IT FALLS INTO THE WRONG HANDS,THAT PERSON CAN RULE THE WORLD BY FORCE!!! keep in mind that at this point in his career,the torch was NOT regaled as a hero,but as an internationally wanted mass-murderer!!,and even stranger is the fact that;carson gives not a shit! “it sure is a pleasure to meet SUCH a world famous character”he tells our hero,then he tells the (still flaming)hero to reach in his pocket,and GO FIND MY DAUGHTER.(!!!??),he tells the torch ALL of this,after gleefuly telling the torch his spines been crushed!!! remind me next time i see a world famous menace to humanity(charles manson)(with super powers yet!!)to accept the formula for a cosmically sought weapon then give him directions to go visit my daughter,okay.(and ''diane''isnt as badly drawn as most golden age women,in fact the art is really good for the time,if only the script was too)the torch and diane beat the CRAP out of the powerless,perfectly human invaders from mars,get caught in several ludicrous traps,make some VERY stupid wisecracks,then emerge victorious!! the martians then explain that they never wanted to invade earth at all!!it was all that bastard rittons fault,right,a cheap earth hoodlum with one eye,tricked a technologically superior society millions of miles away into raiding earth for whar are technically fireworks(deadly,like cherry bombs,but not warfare ammo at all ),despite the fact that they murdered her father(girl must have had an inheritance or somenthing.bitch.)diane hopes martians an humans can live in peace someday. whatever drugs carl burgos was taking,i suspect theyre illegal now.

My real point was that modern writers in Comics,TV and Movies insult our intelligence too.Peter Parker selling pictures of Spider-Man to The Daily Bugle which izes him,instead of to The Daily Globe which would make him a hero and pay him more for those pictures.Criminals knowing about Doctor Noah Burstein(Power Man#48(12/77)-49(2/78)and Cage vol.1#8(12/92))but the U.S.Government which wants government controlled heroes(Defenders vol.1#126(12/83)-Olympus Project).The Skrulls not using their shape-changing abilities to ambush people or the First Line not using lethal force to defend Earth from an Invasion(Marvel:The Lost Generation#12(3/2000)).Defenders vol.1#4(2/73)the Black Knight gets turn to stone but the Defenders don't take him to Thor so that he can order the Enchantress to turn him back (Thor is second in line to the throne of Asgard) or get Odin to do it.

If you use Marvel-Earth as a Template all those Martians can be explained—The “Humans” could be an Inhuman colony on Mars;the solo Martians could be Martian Deviants,Mutants,Mutates or Androids;the Martian Races could be like all the Hidden Races on Marvel-Earth(Inhumans,Atlanteans Lemurians,Bird-People,Savage Land Races,etc.);The other Races could be from the Microverse or Dimensions bordering Mars(like Arkon's Dimension does Earth).

For the record, this story is more or less a retelling of Weird Fantasy#15(#3), drawn by Al Feldstein, in the story “Martian Infiltration” wherein the heroes are revealed to be friendly Venusians here to keep the Martians(idfentifiable because they dont show up on film!!!??)from causing Earth to suffer the same fate they did, they all die unfortunately. both alien races look human, but the story's plot is the same, the werewolf story in MENACE#3 is also a retelling of a story from Vault of Horror, but their version used vampires, although it would do away with the twist endings and mostly have normal humans on the list,there should be an EC. monster blog.
