Meet... the Monster!

Derek Welles

History: By the year 2050 A.D., time-travel to the past had become common, with tourists going back to ancient eras. Derek Welles wanted to travel into the future, but he was warned by his fellow scientists that travel to the future was impossible because the future did not exist yet (relatively speaking) and that Welles would encounter dire results if he attempted it. Thinking otherwise, Welles created a time-travel device and set it to go 1000 years into the future. Upon his arrival, Welles found the Earth to be a raw, primative world devoid of civilazation. Mistakenly thinking that he had actually travelled to the past, Welles set his time machine to return to his own time, never seeing the final message carved in stone from the future Earthlings who left the planet in search of a new world.

Height: 5 ft. 11 in.
Demonstrated Powers: Derek Welles was an inventive genius who created a functional time-travel device which allowed him to travel to a future age.

Equipment: Time machine: phone-booth sized cabinet which could transport single occupent through time and space.

Comment: Perhaps “Derek Welles” was so named as a tribute to H.G. Wells, author of The Time Machine.

Comment: In the story, it was stated that the time-tourists travelled via a “time tunnel”; this story preceded Irwin Allen's 1960's TV series The Time Tunnel.

Jumping to conclusions and assuming. This story puts the problem with that in a wild way. That the future may not be anything like what we might believe…Great!
