Gorgolla
History: Gorgolla and his invasion force of gargoyles left their home planet on a mission to conquer and enslave Earth. Upon reaching Earth, the army dispersed to every country of the world and stationed themselves atop buildings to spy on mankind. Gorgolla awaited in the Himalayan mountains to send the signal to strike. David Hartnell, an American explorer, found Gorgolla and was captured by him. Gorgolla told Hartnell of his plans to conquer earth and sent out the signal for his gargoyles to attack. A swarm of thousands of the winged creatures attacked and killed Gorgolla. The gargoyles told Hartnell that they watched humanity and learned of love and charity, and wished to remain as guardians of the human race.
In modern times, other gargoyles under the command of Granitor attacked the Earth. Their threat was ended by IT The Living Colossus and Fin Fang Foom.
Height: 30 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: Gorgolla had great strength, stone-like skin, and could fly by use of his wings. Gorgolla was much larger than his army of gargoyles, which were roughly the size of humans. No explanation was given for Gorgolla's large size.
Equipment: Teleportation equipment which could open a space-warp aperature between Earth and Stonus Five; the gargoyles would then fly through under their own wing-power.
Comment: Other gargoyle creatures can be seen in the story “The Gargoyles” in Tales of Suspense # 46 (art by Steve Ditko). It is possible that these creatures were from the Stonus Five gargoyle race.
Comment: It is possible that the creature seen in Marvel Tales (vol. 1) # 127 is also from Stonus Five.
Comment: It is unknown if there is any connection between the gargoyles of Stonus Five and “The Gargoyle From The 5th Galaxy” from World of Fantasy # 19.
Comment: The goddess Venus encountered gargoyle creatures in Venus # 16; possible connection to Stonus Five?
Comment: Gorgolla and the gargoyles of Stonus Five should not be confused with The Grey Gargoyle, the villain introduced in Journey Into Mystery # 107.

I enjoyed the gargoyle stories. I liked reading them in Where Monsters Dwell, and the follow up story arc with Colossus and Fin Fang Foom as well.

the creature from ''ONE OF OUR GARGOYLES IS MISSING'' was of supernatural origin, but dont lose hope!!!!,in ALL WINNERS COMICS#1,the golden-age ANGEL fought ''the mad gargoyle'',captain america fought gargoyles in issue #35 of his series, and MYSTIC#24 also has a creature called ''THE GARGOYLE'',and even though it was not composed of living stone, and was more chimera-like in appearence,it WAS an alien, believe it or not,so what do you think is an explanation for it?my guess is it was a mutant from stonus 5,i also wonder if the shape-shifting gargoyle in TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE;the movie was any connection,by the way,was that issue of ASTONISHING TALES ever reprinted?
