Meet... the Monster!

Grottu

History: Atomic bomb tests were conducted in the African deserts. The radiation appartently mutated an ant, which grew to monstrous size, and gave it human-level intelligence. Leading a swarm of army ants, the giant ant attacked native villages. The locals called the ant “Grottu” which meant “demon”. A hunter known only as “Frank” went to Africa to check on reports of the giant ant and found the stories to be true. Grottu led the ants to the port of Mombasa where he ordered the ants to board ships to spread his invasion force throughout the Earth. Acting as human bait, “Frank” lured Grottu to a warehouse, where sugar was poured onto Grottu, completely covering the giant ant. The army ants were attracted to the sweet sugar and swarmed over Grottu, apparently smothering him.

Grottu was later seen among a group of monsters being held in the Collector's subterranean museum beneath the surface of Canada. The monsters escaped captivity during the Collector's battle with the Mole Man, and some of the monsters (including Grottu) attacked New York City, but were fought off by an alliance of the Thing, the Hulk, Giant-Man, and the Beast. The defeated monsters were later dispatched into the Negative Zone.
In modern times, Frank Johnson (see Zzutak) acquired the remains of four monsters, one of which was Grottu. The monsters were revived to battle the Fantastic Four, and were defeated.

Height: 30 ft.
Demonstrated Power: Grottu possessed the proportionate strength of an ant magnified by his incredible size. Grottu was seen smashing village huts. Grottu had human level intelligence and could command a swarm of army ants. Grottu communicated by mental telepathy.

Comment: In the flashback story, changes were made through retroactive continuity. It was revealed that “Frank” was actually the immortal monster-hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, Grottu had been covered with molasses rather than sugar, and it was implied that Grottu and some other Earth-bound monsters were mutate creatures created by Kro (warlord of the subterranean Deviant race) to attack the surface world (this could also include The Un-Human that battled the android Human Torch in 1954).

Kro was probably given some technological aid by the Soviet Union (in the form of the renegade Eternal Druig).* * Druig spent most of the Cold War working for the KGB as an “interrogator.” *
