Meet... the Monster!

Spragg

Behold human—the all-seeing eyes of your master!!

History: Two billion years ago, Spragg and his race were harmless spores floating aimlessly in space. They were trapped in the enormous mass of hot, glowing gas which condensed and solidified into the Earth. Trapped deep within the core, the “hill people” developed great mental powers over the years. Spragg, an outcast, was caught in an upheval and thrust into the surface world where he emerged in a village in Transylvania. Spragg used his superior mental powers to enslave the villagers and had them build a dynamo that would increase his powers (Spragg had been injured in his voyage to the surface, which left him with weakened powers). Bob Robertson, a visiting American scientist, discovered Spragg and reconfigured the dynamo to launch Spragg into space (Speculation -possibly creating a repelling magnetic field when Spragg used his powers).

In modern times, Spragg's stone and soil body vaporized as he plummetted back home through the Earth's atmosphere. The electrical energy of his being reached the surface and infused itself in the native rock. Spragg battled The She-Hulk, The Mole Man, and an older Bob Robertson. The Mole Man used a volcanic lava jet to blast Spragg and his people into space.

The other “hill people” went peacefully on their way deep into the galaxy, while Spragg fell through a cosmic worm-hole near Jupiter and emerged 10,000 light-years from Earth. He fought the She-Hulk again; he was defeated and given to a giant humanoid alien named Big Enilwen for his rock collection.

Height: 25 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: Spragg had great powers of telekinesis which he could use to cause earthquakes. He could mentally dominate others with his hypnotic powers. Spragg's major weakness was steel, which had an electromagnetic field that scrambled his powers (a steel helmet protected Bob Robertson from Spragg's hypnotism; in space, the She-Hulk trapped Spragg in a steel net which cancelled his powers).

Originally just a limbless stone “head”, in modern times, Spragg was shown reconfiguring his mass into a mobile humanoid shape; he could also send his intellect out to animate several stone bodies (his “stone clones”) at once.

Comment: It is unknown if Spragg and the “hill people” have any connection to The Living Rock used by the Lava Men in Avengers (vol. 1) # 5.

One of the silliest of Kirby monsters, but a personal favorite. Kirby gives even this goofy character personality, and it rates up there with Goom and Googam IMO.

You know, Enilwen could potentially lose interest in rock collecting, the same way he lost interest in “teddy bears” like Xemnu the Titan. Whereupon, he might return to our solar system and animate a much bigger rock! Like, say, that man-shaped asteroid formerly known as the Living Pharoah/ Monolith?

I think Spragg may have reappeared in the silent story in Defenders vol 2 #12

Couple of replies to previous comments:

First, the Living Monolith returned in Uncanny X-Men a few years ago. He was part of Apocalypse's Twelve.

Second, it wasn't Spragg in Defenders. The 'villain' controlling the rocks was a tiny alien creature that was stepped on by the Hulk and killed.

Just recently found a copy, and it's a big fav of mine after only one reading. Spragg's dialodue is priceless. “Now, surface creatures, I shall reveal to you your Master's origin!”
