The Abominable Snowman
History: “Big Carl” Hanson was a cruel thug who wanted to capture an “Abominable Snowman” which he had seen in a picture that he had stolen, but he was warned by the natives of the Himalayan Mountains that the picture was cursed. Not heeding their warning, Hanson went in search of the creature, and was eventually transformed into the muttering, shaggy brute that he first saw in the picture.
Height: 7 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: Transformed by supernatural means, Hanson displayed no special powers, although one can assume from his greater size that he also had great strength.
Comment: This “Abominable Snowman” should not be confused with the hoax used by The Lizard Men, nor with Yeti (introduced in Fantastic Four # 99 as one of The Inhumans and Marvel: The Lost Generation mini-series as a member of The First Line), nor with Ternak and the Cold People (introduced in Fantastic Four # 145), nor with The Wendigo (introduced in Incredible Hulk # 162), nor with Yetrigar (introduced in Godzilla # 10), nor with Sasquatch (introduced in X-Men # 120).
It is possible that the source of Hanson's curse is Tanaraq of The Great Beasts, who (in Alpha Flight (vol. 1) # 23) was revealed to be the cause of Walter Langkowski's transformation into Sasquatch.
Comment: This story should not be confused with the story “I Am the Abominable Snowman!” from Strange Tales # 72 (art by Paul Reinman).
Comment: A similar story to this first appearred in Strange Worlds # 1, “I Captured the Abominable Snowman!” (art by Steve Ditko), wherein a man was transformed into a “Yetti” creature by supernatural means. Perhaps this is a related curse to the one that transformed Hanson.
…no matter what you call him, let us hope, for your sake, that he does not answer!
Comment: In Amazing Adult Fantasy # 11, the story “The Ice-Monster Cometh!” (art by Steve Ditko) features a similar ice monster which spoke English; possibly it was a man transformed into a monster by the same curse.
In Fantastic Four # 54 (art by Jack Kirby), Prester John was shown battling a tribe of Abominable Snowmen while reminiscing about his adventures during the Middle Ages.
In Silver Surfer (vol. 1) # 1 (art by John Buscema), the Surfer encountered three savage yeti-creatures in the Himalayan Mountains.
In Black Panther (vol. 1) # 5 (art by Jack Kirby), the Black Panther fought a large Yeti-like creature in the Himalayas.
Comment: In Fin Fang Four # 1, the Fantastic Four mentioned that they battled with a number of monsters, including “three Abominable Snowmen”; it is possible (but unknown) that some of the three might have included Hanson or any of the above Snowmen.

The Himalayan Mountains were the long time ancestral home to an ancient order of Tibetan mystics. The Yeti could be considered sacred creatures by these mystics.
Could it be possible that the Ancient One himself created this curse to discourage hunters and thrill seekers from capturing and exploiting the Yetis?

Re: the Silver Surfer. Those yetis he encountered could have been scouts for “Kalizuma and his Warrior-Wizards.” *That was the name of a certain cult that worshipped the Undying Ones. And, the Undying Ones were the extra-dimensional demons responsible for bringing the original Defenders together, on a full time basis, in the first place! Anyway, as I recall, it was in issue 2 or 3, of DEFENDERS vol. 1, that this bunch maqueraded as brown-furred yetis.
