The Chamber of Fear
History: Mike Mathews was a reporter who specialized in digging up scandals (and was not above blackmail). One day he heard mention of Hiram Cragmoor, an eccentric who never allowed others in his house. Smelling a scandal, Mathews broke into Cragmoor's home and found thick fog inside the house, then a stampede of hideous monsters, which disappeared. Mathews found himself in a chamber filled with ghost-like figures of the recently dead. He heard a voice, and turned to see Hiram Cragmoor sitting inside a giant ruby. Cragmoor told Mathews that the chamber was a way station which lead to “The Beyond”. Cragmoor was given instructions from “The Greater Realm”, telling him how and where to dispatch the souls of those who have died. Since Mathews had trespassed, he would take Cragmoor's place, because Cragmoor was old and weary and wanted to be relieved of his task. Despite Mathews' objections, the giant ruby formed around him, trapping Mathews, perhaps forever. With his task ended, Cragmoor went on to his final rest.
Comment: Speculation: Does the giant ruby which imprisoned Cragmoor and Matthews perhaps have some connection to the extra-dimensional entity known as Cyttorak? In a flashback story, Cain Marko found “The Crimson Gem of Cyttorak” which transformed him into The Juggernaut in X-Men (vol. 1) #12.
Comment: Speculation: … or perhaps the giant ruby is somehow connected to “The Bloodgem” (introduced in Marvel Presents # 1) utilized by The Exo-Mind and Ulysses Bloodstone.
Comment: Speculation: …or perhaps the giant ruby is somehow connected to The Star of Capistan introduced in Defenders (vol. 1) # 42.
Comment: Speculation: …or perhaps the giant ruby has some connection to Xorr the God-Jewel who was introduced in Thor #'s 214 - 216.

Great! Too bad we dont get to see more of Matthews in his new post. As a former reporter I can give reality checks to souls who pass his way…Definetly would like to see him meet the Ghost rider. “What do you want? An angel?”

The monsters on this splash page are all great. This man trapped in the ruby at the end was also great. A liitle justice served up. The twist with the visit to the comic book publisher who reacted as he did was also nice.
