Meet... the Monster!

The Crazy Maze

History: Charlie Burke was the greedy owner of a carnival maze. He offered the sum of ten-thousand dollars to anyone who could make his way to the exit, the secret being Burke's maze had no exit. A newspaper reporter discovered Burke's secret, so Burke trapped him in the maze, where the reporter suffocated and died, and Burke continued with his business. When Burke's business dropped off, he heard of a new amusement park maze in the area. While visiting his competition, Burke was given a challenge to find his way out of his competitor's maze. If Burke succeeded, the competitor would leave town. Burke entered the maze and encountered several traps (tear-gas room, tiger, shark pool), but could not find a way out. The competitor revealed himself to be “The Man Called Fate”, and that the only exit from the maze for Burke was a deep, bottomless chasm in the Earth (presumably Hell).

Comment: In Tales of Suspense # 35, “Revolt of the Robots” (art by Paul Reinman), a robed, ethereal cosmic entity called “Fate” appears at the end of the story. It is unknown if this “Fate” is connected with “The Man Called Fate”.

In Tales to Astonish # 33, “The Voice of Fate!” (art by Don Heck), robed cosmic entities called “Fates” are seen; possible connection?

Comment: “The Man Called Fate” should not be confused with The Man In Black Called Fate, whose stories were published in Harvey Comics Thrill-O-Rama.

Can A Comment Save the World?!?

Sounds like Charlie Burke took greedy-lessons from his fellow Charlie (Harris), who suffered a similar carney-related fate.
