The Frightened Man
History: During the Cold War's constant threat of nuclear annihilation, scientist John Bentley adjusted an X-ray machine, and sent an ashtray a few seconds into the future, accidentally creating a process of time travel. Several weeks later, Bentley, using what he learned from his accidental discovery, built a time machine to travel to the safer past, where there was no threat of atomic war. Bentley first appeared in 18th Century France, where he was nearly guillotined in the French Revolution, then the 16th Century Spanish Inquistion, the Black Plague of the 14th Century, and finally in the barbaric Colosseum of the First Century Roman Empire. Returning to his own 20th Century, Bentley learned not to run in fear of the problems of the world, but to face them as mankind's ancestors did.
Height: 6 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: John Bentley was physically an ordinary human who was an inventive genius and was able to construct a functional time machine.
Equipment: Time machine: phone-booth sized cabinet which could transport single occupent through time and space.
Comment: Speculation - Bentley's “accidental” discovery of the secret of time travel, and his time travels taking him to the worst events of the past seem too coincidental to be sheer chance. Perhaps all of these events were the manipulations of Immortus, the Lord of Time (introduced in Avengers # 10), for some as yet unknown agenda.

Could this guy be any relation to the very imaginative Charles Bentley? *See under “X.” *

OOO I like that Idea! I can just picture the two swapping notes, sometime later…Tying tales together like that sounds neat!

Thanks, C. P. By the way, that note I referred to? I actually placed it under “Simon Drudd.” My bad!
