Meet... the Monster!

The Mole Man’s Monster

History: On Monster Isle, The Mole Man discovered a network of subterranean tunnels which led to the Earth's core. In these tunnels dwelled a horde of creatures. The largest and deadliest was mastered by the Mole Man and sent to the surface world to destroy atomic power plants around the world. The Mole Man sent the huge monster to battle The Fantastic Four on their first adventure.

The Mole Man's monster returned to battle the Fantastic Four on other occasions, and also battled with the original X-Men and with the JLA when they crossed over into the Marvel universe.

Height: 100 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Monster was powerful enough to dig its way through countless tons of rock-hard earth, and could crush a military tank in one hand. The Monster's hide was tough enough to resist artillary fire. The Monster had limited intelligence and was commanded by the Mole Man.

Comment: In Marvel Universe # 7, The Monster Hunters had an adventure that occurred chronologically before the Fantastic Four's first adventure, and it was revealed that the monsters of Monster Island were mutate creatures created by Kro, warlord of the subterranean Deviant race; more than likely, the Mole Man's Monster is a Deviant mutate as well.

The Mole Man's Monster received the name “Giganto” in Avengers West Coast # 54, however he is referred to as “The Mole Man's Monster” in this index so as not to confuse him with the Sub-Mariner's monster Giganto.

I think this monster is called GORMUU. He also appeared in FF #264 and a realative of his (also called Gormuu but cleary a different one) shows up in FF #271.

............. Giant Devilfish :: 20 November 2004

I think its name is Giganto the Earth most big creature,of course he does not have any relationship with Namor`s monster.This subterranean monster is one of my favorite classics.

............. Lord Pegasus :: 29 November 2004

Actually the creature's name is Grommu and he has a mate. Gormuu was the alien Reed Richards faced off against before the infamous spaceflight that created the Fantastic Four.

Has anyone read Astonishing X-Men #7? Am I corrrect in assuming that the monster that the X-Men fight (with the help of the Fantstic Four) is Gormuu alias The Mole Man's Monster?

I would like someone to confirm so that I can indicate so in my database.

............. Michael Regan :: 14 July 2005

Thank you for the confirmaiton… Gormuu IS NOT the Mole Man's Monster. I will make the appropriate change in my database.

The question still remains, though… is the creature in Astonishing X-Men #7 the Mole Man's Monster??

............. Michael Regan :: 18 July 2005

Further, I have found that The Mole Man's Monster may also go by the name of “Giganto”, not to be confused with Namor's Gianto, the giant walking whale. (see the link)

Dear Editor,
This was some monster. I read re-prints of Fantastic Four number one in the past.
I was impressed with this creature. How about a show down between Mole man
and Tyrannus complete with monsters?
