The Mummy
History: Coming to Earth centuries ago with the intention of conquest, the giant Mummy found the atmosphere of the Earth poisonous. Building a pyramid to protect itself, the Mummy lay in a state of suspended animation. Roused from its slumber by explorers in the pyramid, the Mummy, its mind still dulled by its slumber, chased after the explorers. The Mummy broke out of the pyramid to the outside world, where it was once again exposed to the Earth's atmosphere. Realizing too late what it had done, the giant Mummy apparently died
Height: 20 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Mummy was strong enough to smash through stone walls.
Comment: It was never shown what The Mummy looked like beneath the bandages; it is unknown if The Mummy was a living being or a machine.
Comment: It is unknown if there is any connection between The Mummy, Gomdulla, or Mummex (see Tales to Astonish # 8).
Comment: Speculation - Although The Mummy's story chronologically was told after the Gomdulla story, it is possible that The Mummy went on to become Gomdulla; Gomdulla's past, before he was on display in the museum, was never shown. The Mummy apparently died, and perhaps the activating stud on Gomdulla's foot was some sort of resuscitating mechanism. Perhaps the “dead” nameless Mummy (whose mind was dulled from centuries of slumber) was “cleaned up” and put on display in the museum, and he went on to become Gomdulla after his mind cleared and he remembered his real name.
Comment: The Mummy should not be confused with N'Kantu the Living Mummy (introduced in Supernatural Thrillers # 5).

Was Mummex looking for The Mummy or Gomdulla?

I'm pretty sure this archeologist's last name began with a “C.” So, then, which monster-hunting family did he belong to? The Carters or the Cartwrights?
............. Carycomic :: 03 March 2004
…and while we're on the topic of families involved with monsters, let's not forget The Averys or The Burkes.
............. John Kaminski :: 06 March 2004
The Averys I'm familiar with (you were kind enough to include a speculative “genealogy” listing their appearances). But, what stories fetured the Burkes?
............. Carycomic :: 13 March 2004
The name “Burke” appears in the stories of X-13, The Ghost Rode a Roller Coaster, The Crazy Maze, and Sserpo.

That's a biiiiiiiiig mummy! I wonder if Erik Larsen was thinking of this story when he had a huge mummy show up in the Savage Dragon / Hellboy crossover.

The Mummy looks like the Host from Superman # 5-6. Another Kirby tribute by John Byrne?
