The Ovoids
History: Dr. Doom first encountered the Ovoids when he was lost in space after a battle with the Fantastic Four (see Fantastic Four # 6). Taken aboard their spaceship, Doom gained the trust of the Ovoids and learned their science and mental abilities (most notably, the ability to switch his personality into another's body). The Ovoids returned Doom to Earth, and he once again battled the Fantastic Four using their secrets.
In a flashback story, it was revealed that the Ovoids were responsible for the death of Gabriel the Air-Walker, a herald of Galactus
In more recent times, a lone Ovoid helped The She-Hulk escape from the captivity of The Skrulls, then accompanied her back to Earth.
Height: 8 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Ovoids had a highly advanced science and culture, but had thin physiques, implying they had limited physical strength. The Ovoids had the mental ability of telekinesis (able to move objects with the power of their thoughts). When near death, Ovoids would send their minds from their dying bodies into cloned replacement bodies, making the Ovoids practically immortal (this ability was not unique to the Ovoids (as Dr. Doom was able to learn to perform it) however the Ovoids had perfected it first).
Equipment:
* Spaceship
* Mental teleporter device - given to Dr. Doom
Comment: The Ovoids had a similar appearance to Klagg, intoduced in Tales of Suspense # 21.
Comment: Similar abilties (transferring one's personality into another body) were used by Torr and Zetora the Martian. It is unknown if either of these has any connection to the Ovoids.
Comment: The villainous Insidio, who was revealed to be an Ovoid, was introduced in Quasar # 53.

The Ovoids also appeared in Thor 305 (or so I believe, it may be 306), where they are responsible for the death of one of Galactus' Heralds, the Air-Walker.

I've always wondered why no writer for Marvel ever used the following 2 plots; 1: showing that the Ovids rescue and training of Dr. Doom was actually a very roundabout plan to conquer the Earth, with Dr. Doom as a “Manchurian Candidate.” OR 2: having them be the hidden origin of numerous other heroes/villains, with their easy going “Hey, wanna know the secrets of science a million years ahead of your own?” attitude.

The Ovoid technique of minder transference into prepared cloned bodies is similar to that of Arnim, the Hate-Monger, the Red Skull, Phaeder, Maelstrom, and Kang.
