Meet... the Monster!

The Scarecrow

History: In a small town in New Mexico, an ordinary scarecrow in a farmer's field was struck with “Delta rays” from an atomic explosion. The Scarecrow came to life and grew in height, and then went on to make the greedy banker who had foreclosed on the farmer's land return the money he had swindled from the elderly man. With its mission accomplished, the Scarecrow returned to the fields, back to its normal size and lifeless state.

Height: 100 ft.
Demonstrated Power: The Scarecrow was strong enough to topple a building.

Comment: Speculation - It is possible that the “Delta Rays” contained “Pym particles” (sub-atomic particles discovered by scientist Henry Pym (see The Man In The Ant Hill) which could alter the size of beings and objects) which would account for the Scarecrow's being able to increase its size.

…versus a centuries-old cult of blood!

Comment: Speculation - Given the unlikely origin of the Scarecrow, it is possible that this scarecrow was animated by supernatural forces, possibly as an Earth-bound avatar of the supernatural Scarecrow who was introduced in Dead of Night # 11.

Another tale of scarecrows being brought to life can be found in Journey Into Mystery #77, “They Were Only Scarecrows” by Steve Ditko.

Another scarecrow creature can be seen in World of Suspense # 2; possible connection?

Comment: The Scarecrow should not be confused with the Iron Man villain introduced in Tales of Suspense # 51, nor with the supernatural character introduced in Dead of the Night # 11, nor with The Batman's enemy from DC Comics, nor with Dr. Syn/The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, nor with the Ray Bolger character from The Wizard of Oz.

Excuse me folks, have you seen Dorothy? Coud you direct me to the “Wizard Of Oz “?

Hmm. Perhaps DC should have sued 'em for plagiarism.

Hi,
I thought this was a cute story. The good guys won. The bad guys lost. There was no blood. There was a happy ending.
There was a pure and noble hero.
WHAT MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY ASK FOR?
