Meet... the Monster!

The Stone Men From Saturn

History: An invasion force of the Stone Men from Saturn first came to Earth in the country of Norway, where their destinies crossed the path of Dr. Don Blake, the human identity of the Norse thunder god Thor. The Stone Men inadvertently caused Blake to rediscover his true identity of Thor. Thor battled the Stone Men and drove them back into space.

Years later, Thor again encountered five Stone Men who were marooned on an asteroid when their spaceship's damaged engine forced them to land. The Stone Men placed themselves in suspended animation until awakened by Thor. The five Stone Men were destroyed when their damaged spaceship blew up.

Height: 8 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Stone Men were silicon-based lifeforms that already had great strength which was multiplied in Earth's oxygen atmosphere. The Stone Men were strong enough to uproot trees and had invulnerable bodies.

Weapons:

* Disintegrator guns

* Mechano-Monster - a robot warrior

* Spaceships - equipped with atomic force fields and 3-D holographic “monster-image” projection

Comment: The Stone Men from Saturn somewhat resemble The Thing of the Fantastic Four.

Comment: The Handbook to the Marvel Universe said the Stone Men from Saturn were actually Kronans from from the planet Ria in the Krona star system, and were not native to the planet Saturn, only using it as a base.

Comment: The Stone Men from Saturn should not be confused with the Stone Men from the subterranean depths of Earth seen in Tales to Astonish # 6.

Comment: It is unknown if the Stone Men from Saturn are connected to Thorr, The Things on Easter Island, or the Stone Giants who came Back From the Dead.

Can A Comment Save the World?!?

In the ongoing “Planet Hulk” storyline, the Hulk finds himself on a distant alien world where beings from different races are made to fight as gladiators for the amusement of the masses. During a respite from battle, a rocky-skinned fighter tells the story of how he and his comrades once faced a god incarnate and lived. Clearly, he is one of the Stone Men from Saturn.

It was just over 40yrs ago that I happen to see the cover of JIM #83. It was the “Mighty Stone Men From Saturn” on the cover that made me pick up that issue. (thinking it was still the same type of ” Kirby Monster” type story ) But this story was somewhat different…a transition issue with Thor in it. A beginning of the super-heroes and the demise of the “Monsters”…

….Was I one of the few that hated to see the “Monster “theme disappear ? Probably…
(thank goodness for reprints)

On to the present…Joe mentioned “Planet Hulk” storyline that has one of the original Stone Men from JIM#83 in it. It also has a descent story line to go with it.
