Meet... the Monster!

The Things From Nowhere

History: One Sunday afternoon, Joe Carter was watching a baseball game on his television when the picture went out. Trying to fix the television himself, Carter somehow reconfigured the circuitry so that the set received a blurry picture of what looked like a war between two groups of alien creatures. After checking with the TV-schedule in the newspaper and telephoning two friends, Carter learned that his was the only TV set that had this program on. Carter figured that in “fixing” his TV, he somehow tuned into events that were occurring on an alien world. Carter heard one group of aliens say that the invaders had won the war. Trying to get a clearer picture so he could learn where these events transpired, Carter tried once again to adjust the TV's circuitry, but the picture went back to normal reception. Carter never realized that the “alien war” he was receiving was actually an army of red ants conquering a colony of black ants right beneath his window.

Height: A fraction of an inch
Demonstrated Powers: The Things From Nowhere were common ants with no special powers.

Comment: Speculation - It is possible that Carter somehow altered the circuitry of his television into a similar configuration to that of the “cybernetic helmet” used by Henry Pym (see The Man In The Ant Hill) when he began his career as Ant-Man in Tales to Astonish # 35. Pym used the “cybernetic helmet” to pick up the thoughts and “mental pictures” of ants. Perhaps the blurry pictures Carter was receiving were the thought-impulses of the ants.

Comment: This story was previously done as “The Voice of Doom!” (artist unknown) in Tales of Suspense # 4 using a HAM radio rather than a television.
