Meet... the Monster!

The Tree Alien

History: On a dark and stormy night, a flying saucer landed on Haunted Hill and released an alien prisoner. A voice inside the saucer told the prisoner that he was sentenced to one year of exile on Earth, then the saucer left. This was all overheard by a boy who was out searching for his dog; the boy overheard the conversation, but never saw the aliens because of the darkness and rain. The boy went to tell his story to the people of the small town, but when the people climbed up to the hilltop, all they saw was a lone, leaf-less tree. No one believed the boy, but the town turned the hill into a tourist attraction with the alien story. One year later, a flying sauce landed and the single tree on the hilltop ran into the flying saucer, which then took off. The people realized that the lone tree had been the alien all along.

Height: 9 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The animated tree demonstrated no special powers.

Comment: Living tree invaders were encountered by hunter Frank Savage on Earth in Tales of Suspense # 10 in the story “I Was Trapped in Nightmare Valley” (art by Paul Reinman); could this alien be connected to those living trees?

Comment: It is unknown if the Tree Alien has any connection with The Living Trees or Groot.

Comment: It is unknown if there is any connection between the tree alien and the H'ylthri - the sentient plant race living in the dimension of K'un-Lun (introduced in Iron Fist (vol. 1) # 2)

Comment: Speculation - Since it seems that “trees” would not be physically capable of building a flying saucer, it is possible that the Tree Alien was actually one of a race of shape-shifters (possibly The Skrulls from Fantastic Four # 2 or The Xartans (the “Carbon-Copy Men”) from Journey Into Mystery # 90) disguising itself as Earthly plant-life to remain in hiding.

Comment: This story is very similar to the story “It Hides In The Forest!” from World of Fantasy # 17 (art by Joe Sinnott), wherein an alien shape-shifter disguises itself as a tree in the forest.

Comment: Both stories are redone from the story “Horror on Haunted Hill!” from Adventures Into Weird Worlds # 14 (reprinted in Beware # 4).

I remember this story from Creatures On The Loose # 13, one of the first comics I ever bought for myself as a child.

This is actually a retelling of “Horror on Haunted Hill”, reprinted in BEWARE! #4. In that story, the tree alien was from Saturn, and it died when struck by lightning while fighting with an escaped human criminal.

On the cover of Strange Tales vol.1#32(10/54)[www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=11623]a man is turning into a tree.
