The Twilight World
History: When his college professor scoffed at his term paper concerning the nature of time, an angered Paul Harper stormed from his office. Going for a drive with his girlfriend, Cathy, Harper drove down an unfamiliar stretch of road, and soon found his car enveloped in a strange mist. Stopping the car, Paul and Cathy made their way through the mist on foot. They emerged and found themselves in a prehistoric land. They encountered such prehistoric creatures as a sabre-tooth tiger and a tyrannosaur, then they were captured by a hostile tribe of Neanderthal men. The tribe was going to sacrifice the two to a pterodactyl, but they were saved by a primative man who identified himself as “Cro”. Cro led the two back to the mist. Paul and Cathy entered the mist, and emerged again in the present by their car. They told their story to the professor, who wrote everything off as an hallucination, but that didn't explain the tiger-teeth necklace that Cro tossed into the back seat of the car…
Comment: Speculation - The Twilight World was inhabited by prehistoric animals from different time periods that historically did not exist at the same time (i.e. mammals existed with dinosaurs). Some possible explanations for this are:
- The Twilight World was a creation of Immortus the Time Lord (introduced in Avengers # 10) who populated it with animals he pulled from different eras of the timestream for some as yet unknown agenda. The strange mist was the result of a time warp. The idea of travelling through time while walking through a fog bank was also used in the story “The Madness!” (see The Asylum Keeper)
- The Twilight World was actually The Savage Land (introduced in X-Men # 10). The Savage Land has animals from different eras existing side-by-side. The strange mist somehow transported the two through space rather than time (perhaps the work of the sorcerer Khor (who fought the Golden Age Vision in Marvel Mystery Comics # 22), who had a base in a prehistoric jungle).
In X-Men: The Hidden Years # 4, the mutant Magneto stated that low-level subterranean radiation in the Savage Land made everyone mildly telepathic, thus allowing people from diverse cultures to communicate with each other (which explained how everyone seemed to speak English). This would explain how Paul and Cathy were able to speak to Cro.
Courage Honey! We'll think of SOMETHING!
Paul and Cathy were menaced by a RED tyrannosaur. Could this possibly be Devil Dinosaur? Was the Twilight World actually the extra-dimensional Dinosaur World of Jack Kirby's “Devil Dinosaur” series?
In Devil Dinosaur # 9, it was established that there is a space-warp connecting the Dinosaur World to Earth; possibly Paul and Cathy went through this portal.

If it really was Devil Dinosaur, then Paul and Cathy were indeed transported through time, as well as space. DD and his pal Moonboy didn't get to the Savage Land, until circa 2001!* After the two of them teamed up with Spider-man against the Circus of Crime, either SHIELD or the FF provided aerial transport to the Savage Land.

The Twilight World could be Dinosaur Forest[Amazing-Man Comics#7(11/39),which like K'un-Lun phases in and out Earth's dimension. It was discovered by 2 scientists in 1933 but they weren't able to report their findings until it phased back to Earth in 1939.[http://blaklion.best.vwh.net/centaur.html]

The Twilight World and Dinosaur Forest could also be the interdimensional world called Aquatania[Amazing-Man Comics#5(9/39)Chuck Hardy story(he's their John Carter—he also gains super-strength on an alien world)].Dr.Ronald Wells and Dr.Jay Douglas discovered Dinosaur Forest. That Red T-Rex seen in the Twilight World could be Dinosaur's father(Devil's mother and 2 siblings were seen and killed in Dinosaur #1(4/78)).

Clarification Re: Devil Dinosaur's father — Devil's red skin was the result of being burned by flames as a hatchling (as seen in Devil Dionsaur #1), so it was not known to be an inherited trait.

The Official Handbook Of The Marvel Universe Update'89#2(8/89)page 29(His red hide is due to a mutation activated by the heat and flame);it also says that he was a Mutant member of his own race(his mutant nature could have been latent or recessive and it could have been triggered by the heat and flame).
