The Warriors from Igneous Rex
We come from “Igneous Rex,” the fire planet!
History: Aliens (at least four in number) came to Earth and established a base inside the volcano of a South Seas island. Because of the conditions on their home planet, they found the volcano to be quite comfortable. One day, while feeling chilly, the aliens made the volcano erupt ahead of schedule. When the chief of the island's native tribe came to investigate the unscheduled eruption, he was captured by the aliens, who told him of their plans to conquer Earth. Thinking that no one would believe the chief, the aliens released him. The chief found his only way to stop the aliens was by selling the island to the U.S. government for use in atomic-bomb testing; the aliens were apparently destroyed.
Height: 5 ft. 2 in.
Demonstrated Powers: Due to planetary conditions of their homeworld, the aliens could survive in the extreme tempertures of a volcano.
Equipment:
- Guns - capabilities unknown
- A device which could trigger volcanic eruptions

The chief saved the day for his tribe and the entire world. He never got the credit.
He had to keep quiet. He even took the blame for seling the island.
The good guy not being acknowledged is a common theme in many of these stories.
I like these creatures. They were not to ghastly looking, yet alien enough to catch my eye.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #51 was the first Marvel comic book that I remember buying when I was a kid. It's a great issue, and THE CREATURES IN THE VOLCANO was the most interesting story to me. I really like the artwork, as the aliens from Igneous Rex are very sinister looking, and the South Seas island setting added a cool background to the story. Another unsung hero ends up saving our planet from malevolent space invaders, and that's a common theme of the Marvel pre-superhero stories. I still own a copy of JIM#51, and I wouldn't think of parting with it. It's one of the key issues in the early Marvel pre-superhero comic books, and it always sells for top dollar on Ebay. If you haven't read this issue, try to get your hands on a copy, as you won't regret it.
