Meet... the Monster!

Thorr

History: One million years ago, on an island in the South Pacific, the stone-like Thorr was apparently buried up to his neck and went into a state of hibernation until he received a signal to arise. In modern times, Thorr was mistakenly roused by an archeologist exploring the island. Going on a rampage and destroying a native village, Thorr was left with the false impression that he had just conquered the only civilization on Earth. Thorr summoned his leaders, who landed their spaceship on the island. Meanwhile, the archeologist used dynamite on a dormant volcano, causing the volcano to erupt and destroy the island.
Being too heavy to swin, Thorr and his leaders sank into the sea.

Height: 50 ft.

Demonstrated Power: Thorr was strong enough to dig himself out of tons of earth. No other special powers were demonstrated.

Comment: Name change from “Thorr” to “Thorg” was to avoid confusion with the Norse thunder god, Thor.

Comment: Speculation - Although there is no proof of any relation between Thorr, the Things, and the Stone Giants, perhaps their similarities can be explained by theorizing that they were all part of the same invasion force. Thorr and the Stone Giants never specified where they were from, so it is possible that they all came from the Things' home world of Lithodia Rex.

It is possible that Thorr has some connection to The Monolith creature seen in Avengers #'s 179 and 180 as well.

It is unknown if Thorr has any connection with The Stone Men from Saturn who fought Thor in Journey into Mystery # 83; the Stone Men were smaller in size but had a similar appearance.

And while we're on the topic, Kirby also did a story for DC comics in 1959 (The Stone Sentinels of Giant Island in House of Mystery # 85 (the cover of which seems to be Kirby's “inspiration” for Thorr and the cover of Tales to Astonish # 16) (reprinted in DC Special # 11) which used similar looking characters as the above stories; Kirby would later do a similar cover for Super Powers (second series) # 3 in 1985.

Can A Comment Save the World?!?

I hereby declare that these stone-skinned, Moai-faced aliens that the King created all over his career are in my fond childhood memories the most awesome and unforgettable monsters ever. I don't know, they just fascinate me. Ever have and will. And how perfect for them to come from Saturn! I couldn't imagine something more appropriate for this planet. Old alchymical texts & astrologic describes the Saturnian Principle als hard, cold, sinister, testing and so on. Saturn is also meant to be the Dweller on the Treshold between the Inner Space of the Solar System and the Outer Abyss. What better way to test the God of Thunder than with the powers of Saturn - the Elder God that devours his children. Man, it's perfect. It's scary. It's goofy. And it works.

Something particularly odd about Thorr… in that very same Journey into Mystery #83 that introduced the Stone Men of Saturn referenced above, the end blurb (in what was probably a typo) reminded readers to return to issue #84 for the continuing adventures of “Thorr the Mighty” (not “The Mighty Thor” as he became known). Considering the similarity between the Thorr logo seen above and the original Mighty Thor logo, one has to wonder if the copy editor confused the two characters.
