Titano
Great Scott! We're not on a mountain! We've landed on — Titano!
History: Reports of an immense sea monster in the South Pacific came to naval intelligence. The behemoth, called “Titano” by the natives, caused tidal waves in Japan and destroyed ships in Honolulu. The U.S. Navy assigned a special force to locate and stop the creature. Finding the huge sea crab, the Navy painted a submarine with luminous paint. Titano saw the glowing sub and followed it to the arctic regions, where the sea monster was trapped in a frozen glacier.
Height: 500 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: Titano was a crustacean of immense proportions that dwarfed even whales. Titano was strong enough to cut a target ship in two with a single snap of its claw. Titan could cause tidal waves by the mere movement of its huge body.
Comment: Speculation - It is possible that Dr. Parker (see The Ninth Wonder of the World), who had used his growth hormone treatments on a lobster (increasing its size to 12 feet long) and other sea creatures, was responsible for Titano's tremendous size.
Comment: Titano should not be confused with Titano the Super-Ape who fought DC Comics' Superman.

great to see Titano again. Note that he also appears in a Sinister Tales issue where it
ended trapped in its icy tomb - but what happens if it should ever get gree. What then?! WHAT THEN?!

It could be possible that Titano and Sserpo (from Amazing Adventures #6) could have been produced from the same growth serum. However, while SSerpo did not stop growing, Titano seemed to have stopped at 500ft. Maybe the chemical works differently on shellfish…

Looking at Titano, and the Lobster from the Ninth Wonder story, I'm reminded of an old Saturday Night Live sketch where the studio is attacked by giant lobsters.

I wish Marvel would bring all thier monsters back and put them on MONSTER ISLAND (The Moleman's old stomping grounds located in the Bermuda Triangle). Titano could patrol the coastline.

Hi Christina,
Stan Lee usually came up with the names of the monsters, and he always sought out something that would get the readers attention. In the dictionary the defenition of Titan is: Any of a family of giantsborn of Uranus and Gaea and ruling the earth until overthrown by the Olympian gods. 2) one that is gigantic in size or power. Stan just added an O to the name and there you have it. You have quite an awesome name there!

I suppose the old “run-it-into-a-glacier” trick worked well, but I think everyone would have been happier if they could have constructed a massive pot, filled it with boiling water, and then tricked Titano into diving in. Get out your mallets! All-you-can-eat crabfest!

There are two giant red crabs in Giant-Size X-Men#1(1975) controlled by Krakoa the living island.

not to sound ridiculous(even on a site that discusses characters like 'shagg'and'fin fang foom') but i wonder if the crab people from 'south park' are deviant mutates,i mean i always figured south park was set in the dc universe, what with the super friends analogues the 'super best friends',but the same show does have its own dr.doom, magneto, dock ock counterparts, maybe titano was of the same race?,whatever its still a good story, not 'mister morgans monster'but not'tim boo ba!' either, great cover too……..as you may have guessed,i have absolutely NOTHING to do with my spare time at all.

I wonder if the Giant Red Crabs that Attuma controlled in Defenders vol.1#7(8/73) came from the same place as the 2 Giant Red Crabs that Krakoa the island that walks like a man controlled? A.I.M. Blue mutated sea-life into monstrous form in Iron Man Annual#4(1977);one of their mutates is a Giant Red Crab (page 23 panel 2).
