Nothing Can Stop... The Review!

Marvel's first and only all-monster annual sported a fresh Kirby cover and a whopping 13 stories for a measly 25¢! OK, well maybe 25¢ was a fair chunk o' change back in the day but who would dispute the value? Heck, as the cover says, it's a triple value!!! Whatever that means.

Here's the line-up:

  1. “I Unleashed Shagg Upon the World!” by Kirby
  2. “I Come From The Shadow World” by Ditko
  3. “He Waits for Us in the Glacier” by Heck
  4. “I Became a Human Bomb” by Reinman
  5. “Grottu, King of the Insects!” by Kirby
  6. “I Know the Secret of the Poltergeist” by Ditko
  7. “I Saw the Serpent that Saved the World” by Heck
  8. “The Stranger in Space” by John Forte
  9. “I Saw Diablo!” by Kirby
  10. “I Found the Giant In the Sky” by Ditko
  11. “Beware!! The Ghosts Surround Me!” by Heck
  12. “I Saw the Invasion of the Stone Men” by Ditko
  13. “A Martian Walks Among Us!” by Kirby

Can A Comment Save the World?!?

I told a friend once that all the early Marvel monster stories were about an invasion thwarted by a social reject. While that was a common plot, it wasn't the only one. Reading all these stories together, you get a greater sense of what was going on in the mind of Stan Lee at the time. He was not just a one-note singer he had lots and lots of ideas that were entertaining to kids of the time.

So many of these stories seem familiar to me
that I must have had a copy of this when I
was little (I had just turned 8 years old that
August). My father drove a pickup truck
for the Salvation Army and used to bring
old comics home frequently. He enjoyed
reading them also. It was nice to have
parents that didn't look down on “kid's
stuff”.

Thinking the Strange Tales Annual featuring Spider-man and the Human Torch was the first Strange Tales Annual, I sent Marvel a quarter and a note asking them to send me a copy, which they did. Imagine my surprise when I received this book instead of the Spidey/Human Torch issue. Still, I loved it because someone at Marvel, possibly Fabulous Flo, took the trouble to answer some dopey kids request and throw this in the mail to me. You'll never see those days again. Excelsior!

I wish we could buy so many great stories in one book for a quarter today.
