This was the very first pre-superhero Marvel I ever owned, and the issue was about nine years old when I got my copy. At the time, it seemed so… so ancient! But I was instantly hooked on Marvel monsters as soon as I read the cover balloon: “Look, Mac!! It wasn't a gag! There really is a… Titano!!” In my opinion, this cover perfectly defines the whole spirit of the Marvel monster genre!

Russ,

This holds an early memory for me as well, although mine was from the reprint in (I think) Where Monsters Dwell. I remember staring at that cover while I was in a movie theatre with my older brother. I was about 10 years old, and had read some of the other reprints, but that cover got my attention.

A decade or so later Ir began buying all the original issues (when they were affordable!) and am proud to say I have all the pre-hero Monster issues! They're STILL fun!l

I really think sea monsters were Kirby's forte—Titano, Gargantus, Goliath, Monstro, etc. There's something extremely cool about a gigantic webbed/clawed monster crawling out of the ocean and attacking a city (presumably New York City).
