Actually, Bill, both Tales To Astonish! #1 Jan.
'59 and Strange Worlds #3 Apr. '59 featured
giant monsters before Xom. He does have
the distinction of being the first monster
with a name.

My mom refused to buy me this comic book at the corner drug store, as she thought it was too scary for a young kid. A few years later, I bought WORLD OF FANTASY#18 for five cents at a used book shop, just for the great cover art. I still have a xerox color copy of the cover hanging in my bedroom. XOM is a classic monster!

What a classic issue of WORLD OF FANTASY. XOM crushing down the walls of his prison, as the humans & aliens flee in terror. This is a great sci-fi story with a cool twist at the end. I own a low-grade copy of this issue, and since it was new on the comic book racks in 1959, I always liked it. The cover artwork is fantastic, just like the sci-fi movies that I watched as a kid. The aliens changed dramatically in appearance on the inside pages, but that was typical of the Marvel pre-superhero era. XOM remained as sinister-looking on the inside pages as he was portrayed on the cover, and that really made me happy as a kid. If you haven't read XOM, THE MENACE FROM OUTER SPACE, then I highly recommed it to you. A decent reading copy of WORLD OF FANTASY #18 can be purchased on Ebay cheaply enough, and it would definitely be worth every penny!
